Restoration | The importance of texture and purpose.
Design research, story, imagery and narration by Josh Richman
WAVE rehabilitation patient and medical device research. The WAVE is a hand opening device for stroke patient rehabilitation. It is used to gently pry open and stretch clenched fists by sliding the affected hand over it. Originally envisioned with a smooth surface, through patient research it was discovered that textures are beneficial, so gentle tactile water ripples were added to stimulate hand sensations further helping the rehabilitation process. The WAVE made of solid acrylic, is easily cleaned. Unlike most rehabilitation equipment, the WAVE intentionally does not resemble any traditional medical rehabilitation equipment, playfully and purposely avoiding stigmas that discourage its use.
Design is about being a human advocate. Empathize to align.
